"Be yours to hold it high"

The first morning that I went to Arlington Cemetery to work on this project, I called my Dad to let him know what I was up to and he told me to check out the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae.  The poem is often used around Memorial Day in Canada and the UK, but I think it's beautiful so I wanted to share it with everyone! I also named this blog after a line in the poem!

               "In Flanders Fields"
              John McCrae, 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark out place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We live, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
  In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
  In Flanders fields.
